When we witness someone else’s success, whether it’s in business, sport, relationships, career or whatever, there’s a tendency to see that great success as an end in itself.

When we see the mountaineer at the top of the high mountain, we don’t think so much about the fact that getting there involved taking a long series of steps one after the other. What impresses us most deeply is seeing the successful person at the pinnacle of their achievement, and seeing that success and only that success tends to make many people think that for them doing the same thing would be unattainable.

Creating Consistent Motivation From Within

I love motivation, and I think it’s a very powerful force. I do have one quarrel though with the way most people try to get and sustain their motivation: they rely immensely on external motivators.

When they want motivation, people often turn to reading a motivational book, listening to a motivational speech or seeing a motivational movie. This gets their heart pumping and they instantly feel the drive to act.

Which, in and of itself is great. The problem is that this kind of motivation is simply not sustainable. It dissipates very quickly, often in just a few minutes, and you’re back to your default mental state.

A Surprising Way To Remember What You Learn

Do you remember that awesome personal development book you read last year? You know, the one about success and improvement?

Perhaps not.

Myself, I used to always have trouble remembering what those key lessons where that I learned from all those books I read. It was usually something along the lines of… “Do A in situation B and you will get C” But I can’t walk around with hundreds, or even thousands, of scripts in my mind just waiting to execute them. So unfortunately I forgot them quite quickly. Meaning that I had wasted a lot of time reading great material that I never got the chance to use in real life.
