How Can I Bring More Success Into My Life?
By Paul Bauer

This week's wisdom concerns success. What is Success? Does it mean more money, power, or a larger house or auto? Has our outside world shaped our perceptions and led us to believe that we need more in order to be successful?

A Personal Story

Years ago, I used to think that success meant "getting" the things that I was striving for. And yet, the harder I tried the more they eluded me. There's an old adage that says "If what your doing isn't working, try something different!" I had a feeling that something wasn't quite right. A hunch, an intuition that there was something more. But I didn't know what it was.

I remember for weeks thinking that "something was wrong with me." But something in me kept whispering (as wisdom often does), "Step back and look at things differently." So, I began to reassess my job, my life, and most importantly - my perceptions. How I was thinking or reacting to things in my life. Someone asked me, "Paul how do you define success?" I thought for a moment and responded, "I think that success is moving in the direction towards my goals."

And this person responded by saying "Have you ever considered that how you define success determines if you are successful or not?" I said, "Hmmm, in other words, it's possible to be successful even if you don't get a tangible result?" And being the good teacher he was, he responded "Maybe even when things don't work out immediately, they still work out for our best interest and if we look at success as a current state, we are successful."

He then gave me this poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson:

How Do You Measure Success?

To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of
intelligent people and
the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation
of honest critics and
endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better
whether by a healthy child,
a redeemed social condition,
or a job well done;
To know even one life has
breathed easier because
you have lived --
This is to have succeeded.

May you know this in your Heart of Hearts...

Ask yourself,

"How can I use this wisdom in my life today... in this moment"

Just pause for a moment...
