The Pulse of the Moment
By Julie Jordan Scott

The most sacred moments of prayer, meditation and contemplation allow you to be still enough to both hear and feel your pulse reverberating through your body. Rejoice in the miracle of blood being moved. Be awed by the systems which allow you to flourish.

I have learned these moments of awareness can be replicated intentionally in everyday, mundane moments as well as in transcendent moments.

I also discovered each moment, on its own, has a pulse just like I do.

I remember taking walks with my father on warm summer nights in my childhood. We held hands wordlessly walking and observing the night starscape. Dad occasionally pointed out a satellite or a constellation.

I felt more safe and protected on these walks with Dad than I felt anywhere else in my little life. Somehow in those moments I could "get -- completely understand -- there was no need to be frightened. I became clear that the Divine had all the details handled.

My most important task was settling into the pulse of each moment. In being exactly, completely in that central place, I was accomplishing a lot. I was honoring the man who was and is my father. I was honoring the connection with the Divine. I was honoring myself.

In those moments I had no idea of what was to face me, both the times which were inconceivably joyful as well as moments which were inconceivably heartbreaking.

None of that mattered.

What mattered was staying in the pulse of the moment and knowing that in honoring the sacred, in trusting the moment itself, everything would be ok. I understood this even as a child.

Being present like this tunes us into miracles and propels us forward. Being fully present to each passing moment, seeing each moment whether mundane or extraordinary is what shifts us into an incredible source of momentum.

It is in these moments of connection whether it is found while folding laundry or in receiving a standing ovation or making a winning sales presentation or sitting on the edge of a bench watching the sunrise that we can connect to the Divine and continue moving forward.

Here is how to take this into your life.

Discern an activity or ritual that fully nurtures you. It is important not to commit to a ritual, practice or activity that is appealing to someone else (and not you) or has “should” written all over it. Read the end of that first sentence again.

“Fully nurtures YOU.” Experiment with several over time and see what feeds your soul.

In the activity, ritual or practice you are doing more than simply taking walks with your loved one or writing in your journal or meditating or taking quiet baths or reading inspirational writing.

Just as my night time walks with my father made the night sky brighter, you will be bringing your own star scape into clearer and clearer vision so that you will actively experience the center of each moment. The Divine will delight to work in collaboration with you.

Most of the time I love writing my morning pages three pages of free flow writing first thing in the morning—and that may be the LAST way you want to spend your early morning. My morning pages make my days brighter. I see more, hear more, reflect more, tune in more because I commit to this daily practice where I meet the Divine each morning.

It is in this collaboration and in this noticing that life becomes a continual celebration on every level.

A few moments ago I suggested you discern something. Remember? “What activity or ritual works to nurture you as you move forward?”

I would like to take that a bit deeper.

What is your heart’s desire, right now, in the pulse of this moment? You might ask that question differently. You might say, “What is my reason?” or “What do I really want?” right now, in this heartbeat?

Which ever one suits you, ask that question now.

I continue to remember moments of profound grace and growth such as moments with my father as a child because they continue to move me towards my heart’s desires… my reason.

It is very simple.

I see a changed world. I can see, hear, smell, touch and feel my reason, my heart’s desire. It is present in the pulse of each of my moments. To notice its presence, I must be aware and listen.

I see myself as an observer and a participant in this shift to a changed world as it happens.

I see my children and the world's children of all ages experiencing life through different filters.

What is your personal reason? In this moment you may see inklings of it.... perhaps the picture isn't totally clear.

That’s fine. It’s natural and normal.

Now let’s begin to move it into clarity being patient and caring with yourself in the process.

Tap into the pulse of the moment by being quiet enough to hear it. Experiment with a self nurturing activity, practice or ritual. Invite grace and growth into your moments of practice.

Listen to the reason within the pulse of your moment. Commit to it. Love it into being.
