The Continuous Improvement FormulaBy Brian Tracy Put Your Career On The Fast Track... There are many things you can do to put your career onto the fast track. You can set clear, specific goals for each area of your life and then make plans to accomplish them. You can plan your work and work your plan. Ask For Greater Responsibility... You can accept 100% responsibility for everything you are and everything you become. You can refuse to make excuses or to blame others. You can tell your boss that you want greater responsibilities and then when you get them, put your whole heart into doing an excellent job. Utilize Your Inborn Talents... In the parable of the talents in the New Testament, Jesus says, "Oh good and faithful servant, you have been faithful over small things. I will make you master over large things." If you too will carry out every assignment to the very best of your ability, you will be given larger and more important things to do and you'll be paid more as a result. Dedicate Yourself To Continuous Improvement... The key to long term success is for you to dedicate yourself to continuous improvement. If you become one tenth of one percent more productive each day, that amounts to 1/1000th improvement per working day. Is that possible? Of course it is! Improve A Little At A Time... If you become one tenth of one percent more productive each day, that amounts to one half of one percent more productive each week. One half of one percent more productive each week amounts to two percent more productive each month and 26% more productive each year. The cumulative effect if becoming a tiny bit better at your field and more productive amounts to a tremendous increase in your value and your output over time. How To Double Your Productivity... Twenty-six percent more productive each year, with compounding, amounts to doubling your overall productivity and performance every 2.7 years. If you become 26% more productive each year, with compounding, times 10 years, you will be 1004% more productive over the next decade. That is an increase of ten times over ten years. The Reason For All Great Successes... This is called the Law of Accumulation, or the Principle of Incremental Improvement. It is the primary reason for all great success stories. By the yard, it’s hard. But inch by inch, anything’s a cinch! Become A 1000% Person... Make a decision, right now, to be a 1000% person. Commit yourself to continuous personal and professional development. Read, listen to audio programs and take additional courses. This process will completely transform your life. Action Exercises: Here are two things you can do to put these ideas into action immediately. First, make a plan to become a little bit better every single day. Learn and apply one new idea each day to help you to become more productive and effective at your work. The incremental affect will amaze you. Second, be patient. Don’t expect overnight changes or instant results. Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare. Become a little bit better each day and your future will take care of itself. __________ Brian Tracy is one of the world's leading authorities on personal and business success. Be Willing to Be Outrageous to Get What You Want!By Lisa Jimenez Psychologists say, “If a child has not had a serious fall within the first year of life, they are being too closely guarded.” That statement needs to be said for our adult lives as well. Have you had a serious fall in the past year? If not, is it because you’re being too closely guarded? Are you too cautious? Too safe? Too practical? Too boring? Your lack of courage is costing you – a lot! It is your lack of courage that keeps you from greater profits, more intimate relationships, and a life you love! The good news is one act of courage – in any area of your life – has a powerful affect on all the other areas of your life. Your career, your marriage, your friendships need just one outrageous act to bounce you out of a rut and into a more abundant, courageous life! During one of my recent speeches, after sharing with my audience about the time I moved to Hawaii by myself at the age of 18, I asked them to yell out the most outrageous thing they’ve ever done in life. After a short pause a man yelled, “I once bought a sailboat, and I didn’t know a thing about sailing!” Another shouted, “I walked away from a six-figure income to start my own business!” A lady called out, “I backpacked in Europe for a summer!” another shouted, “I met a man in a bar and married him – and we’re still happily married today!” The synergy in that room was magical! As we relived our most outrageous acts of courage, we began to paint a path to risk again. Courage is like a muscle. It’s weak until it’s worked out. But it doesn’t take long to build this courage muscle into a strong, fit, powerful force! What about you? What are your most outrageous acts of courage? Think about them. Relive them. And let these memories from the courageous side of you help empower the possibilities of today. One courageous act leads to another. It creates a courageous mentality! What is the one thing you are willing to do right now that’s a little outrageous to get your courageous muscles back into shape? Do it! And watch opportunity begin to open up in all areas of your life. There’s something about being willing to go all out that reminds us of just how big and abundant life can be. This one act of courage is your first step that will lead you to a courageous mentality and life of abundance! Make it a great and prosperous day. ___________ Lisa Jimenez, M.Ed., has helped thousands of top salespeople shatter their self-limiting beliefs and finally get the breakthrough success they want. By Joe Tye Have you ever gone to the park on a summer afternoon and watched the children play? They seem to be immune to fear and impervious to pain, don’t they? “Higher!” they shriek as their Dads push them on the swings; after a spectacular wipe-out, all it takes is a quick hug from Mom and they’re back at it again. When’s the last time you felt the same spirit of adventure that animates these kids? How much happier, how much more successful, would you be if you could call upon that spirit at will, if you could replace anxiety with exhilaration, replace fear with fun? Several years ago I was on a trek through the Grand Canyon and fell into a conversation with a hiker visiting the U.S. from Switzerland. I commented on how few Americans ever hike out into the far reaches of the Canyon, especially compared with the proportion of European visitors who do. His response was heart-breaking. He said that we Americans are so worried about our safety and security that we’ve lost the sense of adventure. There is unfortunately a large grain of truth in that statement. If anything, it’s gotten worse in the years since, as anyone who travels frequently well knows. Nearly 2,500 years ago, the Chinese warrior-scholar Wu Ch’i wrote a short tract on the art of war in which he said that on the battlefield, those who are determined to die with glory shall live, while those who merely hope to escape with their lives will die. That is a central paradox of life in America today. The person who simply hopes to hang onto a job and retire with a 401(k) plan reasonably intact dies a little bit every day; the person who attacks life with a spirit of adventure lives every day to the fullest – and is ironically more likely to take the risks upon which financial fortunes are built. It’s been said that no boat ever reached a distant shore without first leaving sight of home. The uncertainty can be frightening – but it can also be exhilarating. As T.S. Eliot said, no one knows how far they can go without first running the risk of going too far. One of God’s great miracles is a desert sunrise, but to witness this, you must first spend a cold night out there on the hard ground, many miles from the nearest hot shower, television set, or microwave oven. Consider these questions: What would you choose to do with your life if every job paid the same and had exactly the same social status? What dreams would you pursue if you knew you could not fail? To what would you devote your remaining time if you knew you only had one year left to live? Would you take a sabbatical and travel the world? Join a writers’ group and get started on the Great American Novel? Sign up to help Habitat for Humanity build a home for someone less fortunate than you? Or would you shy away from the risk and the uncertainty, choosing instead to settle in for 365 evenings of watching television sitcoms? In all likelihood, the biggest barrier standing between you and the fulfillment of your greatest dreams is your own fear. Fear can be a prison more confining than any iron bars. As Dr. Edward Hallowell points out in his book Worry, simple fear can be a learning disability more crippling than attention deficit disorder, dyslexia, and every other medical condition. Here’s my challenge to you: crystallize a mental vision of you actually living that adventure. Clearly define and understand the fears that are inhibiting you from getting started, and preventing you from living your life to the fullest. Then act as if you could not fail. The words were spoken by Winston Churchill, but the wisdom is ancient – the advice echoes through the pages of the Bible, the Bhagavad-Gita, the I Ching, and every other source of eternal wisdom. And it echoes through our world today. ____________ Joe Tye is president of Paradox 21 Inc., which provides corporate training and culture change initiatives based on a proprietary curriculum of The Twelve Core Action Values of Personal Leadership Effectiveness. "If Networking Is A Game, How Do You Know When You've Won?"By Bob Burg In order to effectively answer this question, it might be a good idea to first define the three major elements of the question; "Networking", "Game" and "Won." The reason is that since all of us come from our own world view or paradigm and with our own personal definitions of each term, an answer without definition might lead us to agree or disagree without knowing exactly why. So.... Networking (Burg's definition): "The cultivating of mutually beneficial, give and take, win/win relationships." By its very definition, this means there can be no losers. Game: One dictionary definition says, "An activity providing entertainment or amusement; a pastime." Like a professional athlete who loves their sport like the game it is, but still approaches it as a business, the same might go for you. Hopefully, you're having fun while you work; you enjoy the challenge, the learning, and the people with whom you work. And, while you don't necessarily like everything about the game of Networking, you at least - as Jim Rohn says - "Appreciate the opportunity." In other words, while certain aspects of Networking, such as mingling, follow-up, and occasionally going outside your comfort zone in order to introduce yourself to someone aren't necessarily things you always like, you appreciate the opportunity to network with others, to cultivate the relationships that will eventually benefit you both. Won (Win): According to Webster's, "To succeed or prevail in an effort. To triumph, to be victorious. But, if you prevail or triumph, does that mean someone else has to lose? Well, since, by the very definition of Networking there cannot be a loser, the answer is no. Then, over whom do you triumph? If you must triumph over someone, perhaps it is yourself. It's getting past your fears and reaching out in order to sew the seeds of a new win / win relationship; to cultivate that relationship, and even to do the things necessary to reap from that relationship, and then being able to duplicate those results by helping others. But, back to the original question, how do you know when you've won? If Networking is a game, you know you've won if.... * You feel really good about the relationships you're cultivating. * The people with whom you are cultivating these relationships feel really good about the relationship you're cultivating. * You find your prospect list getting bigger and bigger, with more qualified prospects. * You are adding wealth, prosperity and happiness to the lives of others. * You're getting to present your products and/or services to more people than ever before. * You've reached a higher achievement level within your company (salesperson of the month?). * You're on your way to reaching a higher achievement level within your company. * People seem to gravitate toward you in ways they previously did not. * Your check is getting bigger and bigger. Are the above happening in your life and business? Is success on the outside beginning to manifest? If so, it's a direct result of your personal growth on the inside. And, if you're continually growing on the inside.... then you know you've won the game! Have a terrific Winning Without Intimidation day!
